Free basic digital text, Programmable Logic Essentials – Combinational Logic by Jack D Waller, that introduces LogicWorks is available for download by individuals at:

    More details:

Programmable Logic Essentials: Combinational Logic and Sequential Logic is a two volume set that covers basic digital concepts with a strong focus on modern programmable devices. Concepts are developed in an efficient and innovative format that lends itself to both self instruction and classroom use. Exercises are an integral part of the development of key concepts, and are interspersed throughout the text with solutions provided at the end of each chapter.

The fold-back coil binding facilitates the writing of comments and the completion of exercises in a classroom setting. As well, a double problem set is provided for each chapter along with laboratory activities that reinforce theory. These can be extracted for submission for marking, if desired. The labs are concise and to the point utilizing LogicWorks for schematic construction and simulation. Helpful suggestions and illustrations relating to the use of LogicWorks as well as breadboarding, are provided and pin identification and data sheet information is included for devices in the 74HC_ _ family.

However, the main focus is on programmable logic devices (PLDs). The architectures of S(simple)PLDs, C(complex)PLDs and FPGAs (field programmable gate arrays) are examined. Before proceeding to CPLD and FPGA material, pertinent topics in semiconductor physics and fabrication techniques are examined, including NMOS, PMOS and CMOS. This allows the reader to more readily discern the advantages and disadvantages and unique features of the various modern devices that are discussed in the literature. The CUPL HDL (hardware description language) is thoroughly examined in order to allow various functions, including state machines, to be programmed into an SPLD such as the PALCE22V10.
